In 2002, a woman in Philippines went into the squatters area to distribute her ‘extra’ weekly income from her position as a manager. She learned that a woman was poisoning herself and her two children, as her husband had left her weeks earlier and she had no ability to care for or feed her family.
During this same timeframe, Wendy Bird was living in Utah and had sent out dozens of emails to a variety of email addresses seeking loose pearls to import. The mother of five children ages 12-1, she was looking for something she could do as a hobby.
When the email came of “if you import finished pieces of jewelry from women in my country rather than loose pearls, you will change their lives” Wendy knew she had to do something.
At this time, the philosophy of ‘teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime’ became the underlying mantra for all things Pearls With Purpose. Wendy knew that women in dire circumstances needed a hand up, not a hand out. She also knew that long term self reliance was the solution for breaking the cycle of poverty.
